Rust is typically thought of as the orange-brown flakes that form on an exposed steel surface when iron molecules in the metal react with oxygen in the presence of water to form iron oxides. Rust is caused by the reaction of iron molecules in the metal with oxygen in the presence of water. The iron content of these three metals is low or nonexistent, and as a result, they do not rust. When they are exposed to oxygen, they can, however, react. Over time, a green patina develops on copper, which actually serves to protect the metal from further corrosion by absorbing moisture. A mixture of copper and tin, with trace amounts of other elements thrown in for good measure, is what bronze is made of. It has a much higher corrosion resistance than copper, which comes from nature. Brass is a corrosion-resistant alloy made of copper, zinc, and other elements, as well as other metals. Metals such as brass are also used in the manufacture of jewelry.

The coating on zinc is highly reactive to oxygen when exposed to moisture, and the coating on steel prevents the iron from oxidizing even further when exposed to moisture.
