Located in Asia, India is the largest sugar producer in the world and ranks second behind Brazil in terms of Sugar Exporters In India, the sugar marketing year lasts from October to September.

Maharashtra, like the previous season, may continue to be the top sugar producer this season as well. India's largest sugarcane-growing state, Uttar Pradesh, has maintained high sugar production so far this season despite a severe lack of rainfall in the majority of the districts and pest attacks on the main sugarcane variety, CO-0238, in some areas. However, Maharashtra may hold onto its top spot as a producer of sugar for a second time this season.

Sugar Production

Maharashtra produced 60.3 lakh tonnes, up from 58.8 lakh tonnes a year earlier, and mills in Uttar Pradesh reported 40.7 lakh tonnes of output, 0.5 lakh tonnes up from last year.

Thanks to the CO-0238 variety, which significantly increased productivity and cane juice recovery, Uttar Pradesh became the nation's top sugar producer in the 2016–17 growing season. However, Maharashtra reclaimed its position as the leading producer in 2021–2022 with 137.2 lakh tonnes of sugar production.

According to ISMA data, Karnataka, the third-largest producer, has increased production to 33.6 lakh tonnes from 32.7 lakh tonnes. Gujarat produced 4.8 lakh tonnes as opposed to 4.6 lakh tonnes, and Tamil Nadu produced 3.6 lakh tonnes as opposed to 2.1 lakh tonnes a year ago.

Need For an Alternative

Sanjeev Balyan, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry and Dairy mentioned at a recent conference organized by the web portal Rural Voice, “There is an urgent need to find an alternative variety to CO-0238 with similar yield and recovery. Sugarcane farmers do not know what to do in

view of red rot disease affecting the wonderful variety.” Balyan, Mussaffarnagar MP in Western Uttar Pradesh also said that it became the first variety to please both farmers and sugar mills.

The farmers and sugar mills both benefited from the CO-0238 variety's 2% increase in sugar recovery and 1.5 times increase in cane productivity. When the nation's sugar output fell 21% in 2019–20, it was in UP, where the output reached a record high of 126.38 lakh tonnes.

According to ISMA, of the 55 lakh tonnes of sugar that mills have contracted for export, 18 lakh tonnes have already left the country. The government has authorized sugar mills to export 60.12 lakh tonnes by May 31. An inter-ministerial group decision to allocate additional export quota is anticipated to be made this month. In the previous season, the nation exported a record-breaking 112 lakh tonnes of sugar.

Up to 193 sugar mills have traded 14.90 lakh tonnes, or nearly 25% of the total export quota, with other units at a premium that increased by nearly four times before the sale window closed on January 4.
